In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
