Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
