The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of arranging to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
